the actual unemployment rate at 7.8% is the lowest that it has been since president obama took office. more evidence there have been 5.2 million private sector jobs created in the past 31 months. president obama takes office here and boom the stimulus starts to kick in. 5.2 million. why did the gdp grow more than last quarter? because consumer confidence is at a five-year high. the stock market is near a five-year high. the -- the corporate profits are at a five-year high new housing starts are at a five-year high. foreclosures are at a four-year low. evidence of progress. this is an interesting piece of evidence. the growth of government spending is the lowest that it has been in 60 years, since eisenhower. eisenhower's growth of spending was 3.2%. look at this. kennedy, johnson, carter 13%. reagan george w. bush, obama 1.4%. that is the growth of government spending. now that that you just saw here that is the so-called status quo, progress. so if mitt romney's big change means he is going to skew the tax code in favor of the folks at the top, you can have that kind of change. if mi

fourth highest unemployment rate in the nation. some polls show the state tightening, but generally, it's been moving more towards romney than the obama camp would have hoped. >> what about on the race front, we look at the white and non white vote split. what do you see? >> you see the president per foming significantly underneath that 40% margin that john king took. this is difficult to talk about because you don't like seeing our politics polarized by race. democrats have had a deficit with white voters for more than 30 years. now, president obama made up a lot of that ground in 2008 and democrats have made up for it by having a significant edge, but this combination of a tough economy means that the president's having a hard time getting his white support above 40%. that is a real issue. in the long run, democrats have made a smart bet on diversity. republicans can't hope for a large share of the white vote to bring them over the top, but this is an issue in this collection and with the tough economy, huge implications that both campaigns are going to be paying a lot of attentio

, alex. president obama won this state in 2008 and hasn't seen some of the same effects of the economic downturn as other states in fact the unemployment rate here is at 5.7%. it's far below the national average. but of course mitt romney has a home in this state. he was governor of neighboring massachusetts. so he carries a lot of weight here in this state as well. i expect from president obama takes the podium later on this afternoon you will hear him continue his message to middle class voters trying to make the case that he is the candidate to best preserve the interests of middle class voters and also to sort of reiterate what you heard in that commercial that you ran a little bit earlier on which is that mitt romney has sort of shifted some of his opinions, moved further to the middle to try and shore up votes. that's one of president obama's key messages right now. alex, i can tell you this race here in new hampshire is essentially in a deadlock with the president holding onto a narrow lead. >> i'll tell you whether it's four electoral votes there in new hampshire or nin

that the state would go for mitt romney in 2012. obama carried the state to many people's surprise in 2008. it was a margin of 14,000 votes. it has been a difficult four years for the country but north carolina in particular the state's unemployment is 9.6% which is one of the highest in the country. that is also true for south carolina. the main reason is that this is a heavy manufacturing economy. the state has really taken it on the chin. traditional industries like textiles and furniture and many of those industries were in decline anyway. they were losing their base overseas. the recession was just a killer. those jobs are gone for good it particularly hurt many of the small towns and rural areas of north carolina. manufacturing states have been particularly hard hit by the recession. even some of the newer industries in north carolina such as banking has been really hurt by the problems in the banking industry. some of the newer industries have been hurt so that is why people thought the state would go republican in 2012 because this has been a tough four years at north carol
